Technical Objectives

      The challenges faced by the GiroAfrica2010 team go well beyond the great adventure that the pilots will enjoy, often taken for granted  this teams effort and dedication which will be largely offset by the positive impact of the mode of transport will have on  the future of many countries, in particular the benefit to their people.

This expedition is very important as a field study of the chances of the Giroplane and the impact it can have in this region in the future. It is an opportunity to demonstrate its potential uses, it´s qualities and the surprising ease of use, converting  all these into a tangible reality.

This project has the best support and having this support is the best guarantee of success, allowing for the achieving of a common goal. A technical objective of becoming the first expedition to connect the autogiro from Europe to Africa.

The expedition will be in permanent contact with Ela Aviation, manufacturer  of Giroplanes, dedicated professionals whose efforts in research, development and innovation are notable. With a proven track record of results that have paved the way for the autogiro to become an alternative to other air crafts.

Emilio Lopez Alemani, the founder of Ela Aviation, has been consistantly developing elements which will be of extreme importance, assisting  the implementation of a successful expedition. He feats include developing new fuel tanks which will significantly advance the distance allowed to be covered by the giroplanes.

      General Technical Data: Ela rotor is responsible for 90% of the ELA Autogiros  superb qualities, it is manufactured in a combination of aluminium and fiber glass, carbon and epoxy resin. Rotor blades are manufactured using techniques desiged by ELA Aviacion in their own production plant wich have been certified by Civil Aviation Department. Certification tests have proved ELA Rotor is extremely strong. Bade can support traction loads up to 26000kg, whereas the top flight does not exceed 6500kg. Empty weight 260kg, maximun weight 450kg, VNE 110mph, cruise speed 80-90mph, minimum spedd 25mph, rate of climb 1000fpm, take off distance 20-70mts, landing distance 0-10mts, fuel capacity 75lt, and endourance 400km.       The Spanish  aviation industry is first rate and world renowned. The giroplanes that will participate in GiroAfrica2010 and all the flight equipment will be developed and manufactured entirely in Fuente Obejuna, Cordoba, Spain by Ela Aviation. The giroplanes which will be flown in the expedition boast the use of green fuels, making them the first giroplanes issued using these fuels that reduce the impact on the environment.
